What actually changed in Siri?
The old Siri handled one command at a time and forgot it the moment you stopped talking. The new version, which Apple calls Siri AI, holds a conversation — it tracks context across a back-and-forth exchange, follows a question that refers to something said earlier, and now lives in its own dedicated app where a conversation started on an iPhone can pick back up on an iPad signed into the same Apple ID. Simple requests still run on the phone itself; anything that needs real reasoning, like summarizing a document or handling a multi-step request, routes to Google's Gemini models. Apple says those models run inside its own Private Cloud Compute servers, not on Google's commercial infrastructure, and that the data isn't stored or used to train Google's models.

What does this cost per user?
The update itself is free. But Apple says features that lean on its server-side models — Siri AI among them — carry a daily usage limit that Apple hasn't published a specific number for, tied to "feature, request complexity, and system demand." A standard iCloud+ subscription raises that limit, and Apple has said a paid tier for expanded access is coming later, with no price set yet. If your company already carries iCloud+ seats for field-phone backup, nothing changes today. If it doesn't, and a super starts leaning on Siri AI for daily-log dictation, budget for a subscription once the free allotment runs out.
Is the Gemini partnership a data risk?
Less than the headline suggests. Apple's account is that the Gemini-based models handling Siri's cloud requests run inside Apple's own Private Cloud Compute environment, isolated from Google's commercial servers, with no long-term storage and no use in Google's training data. That's a materially different exposure than dictating field information into a standalone voice API, where a vendor's own data-handling terms are the entire question. It isn't zero risk — Google trained the underlying model, and Apple hasn't published independent audit results confirming the isolation claims — but it's a narrower risk than "your daily log went to an ad company's cloud."
Should you speed up a device refresh for this?
Not on its own. The most useful field case — holding a real conversation while dictating a daily log and following up without restarting — needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer at minimum, and the sharper dictation model needs an iPhone 17 Pro or newer on top of that. If a phone refresh for supers and PMs is already on the books, that's a reason to spec Pro models instead of the standard line. It isn't, by itself, a reason to move a refresh you weren't already planning.
The rollout is automatic and free, so the open question for a GC or sub isn't whether to adopt it — it already landed on every qualifying phone today. The question is which phones in your fleet qualify, and whether an iCloud+ seat is worth adding before a super hits the daily cap mid-log.
