What's actually happening with model releases?

In the first week of September alone, Anthropic, Meta, Google, and OpenAI each shipped a major new model — Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1, Meta's Muse Spark 1.3, Google's Gemini 3.8 Flash, and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra. That's not an anomaly; it's the new cadence. OpenAI's median interval between model launches fell from 170.5 days in 2023 to 49 days this year. Google's dropped from 210 days in 2023 to 93 days in 2026 year-to-date, after dipping as low as 67.5 days in 2025. Enterprise buyers are calling it "model fatigue" — teams barely finish evaluating one version before the next lands and the old one gets deprecated.

Why does this matter if you're not buying AI directly from OpenAI or Anthropic?

Because you're buying it indirectly, through the construction software you already use. Trimble announced in 2026 that its SketchUp modeling tool now runs a conversational AI feature built directly on Anthropic's Claude, using a connector that lets Claude read and edit SketchUp files from plain-language prompts. That's one disclosed example — most vendors don't name which model sits behind their "AI-powered" RFI drafting, submittal risk flags, or budget forecasting. When the underlying model changes — and at an 11-day industry cadence, it will — the vendor's feature can behave differently without a corresponding version bump on their end. You'd have no way to know unless you asked.

What's actually at risk on a live project?

Not every AI feature carries the same exposure if the model behind it shifts. Low-stakes drafting tools are forgiving; anything feeding into a compliance record or a decision with real dollars behind it is not.

What should a GC actually do about this?

Don't wait for the pace to slow down — it isn't going to. Instead, change what you ask vendors before you sign:

  1. Ask which model powers each AI feature, and whether it's a single foundation model or a mix across features.
  2. Ask how the vendor learns about upstream model changes — do they get advance notice from the lab, or find out the same way customers do?
  3. Ask whether they re-test outputs after a model swap, and on what workflows.
  4. Get advance-notice language in the contract for any change that could alter outputs on a compliance- or budget-relevant feature — treat it the same way you'd treat a change to a subcontractor's means and methods.

That last point is the real lesson from this week's "model fatigue" story: the AI labs' release calendar just became part of your supply chain, whether your procurement process accounts for it yet or not.
