How autonomous is "no operator in the cab," really?
Not unsupervised in the sense of no human anywhere near the loop. A proximity system stops the machine automatically if a person or object gets within a set distance, and it stays stopped until the area is clear. Separately, a person monitoring the fleet remotely can step in if a machine gets stuck or hits something the system hasn't seen before; Bedrock describes that intervention as relatively rare, after roughly a year of supervised testing before these jobs went live. The honest read: the seat is empty, but the job still has a person watching — just not one riding in the machine.
What does this change for a sitework sub's crew and schedule?
Sundt CEO Cade Rowley put the value case in scheduling terms, not headcount terms: the partnership is "helping us tackle some of the challenges that matter most in construction: making schedules and costs more predictable, getting more consistent use out of our equipment, and allowing our skilled crews to focus on the work where their experience matters most." That's the realistic near-term pitch — not zero operators, but a fleet that can run more hours per machine (no shift changes, no fatigue-driven slowdowns on repetitive mass-excavation cuts) while your experienced operators move to grading, utility work, and anything that needs judgment calls the system can't make yet.

What's unsettled on liability and insurance?
OSHA hasn't written a standard specific to autonomous earthmoving equipment. Existing equipment rules — 29 CFR 1926.600's inspection and operating requirements — still apply to any excavator on a jobsite, autonomous or not, but they were written with a human operator in mind, and it's not yet clear how "competent person" inspection requirements map onto a machine an operator never sits in. Insurance is similarly early: GL and workers' comp underwriting for heavy equipment has always priced around an operator's training and judgment, and carriers are only starting to figure out how to price a machine whose judgment call is a remote monitor and a proximity sensor. That's not a reason to skip evaluating the technology — it's a reason to loop in your broker and safety officer before the equipment vendor, not after.
