Sundt and Zachry are both large self-performing GCs with heavy civil capability, not small pilot customers — which is the more telling detail than the technology claim itself. The Phoenix site was, as of earlier this year, described as the industry's largest known supervised-autonomy deployment; it loaded human-driven dump trucks the same way a human operator would. The August update is these teams (and others) graduating that same approach to no human oversight in the loop at all.

What does "no operator" actually change on your site?

Every existing site safety plan assumes a person is in that seat — a competent operator, backed by exclusion zones and a spotter when visibility is limited. Bedrock's model swaps all of that for automated proximity detection controlled by software the crew didn't write and can't inspect on the fly. If you're a GC or civil sub whose safety director is writing a site-specific safety plan or JHA for a job where this kind of equipment shows up — your own fleet or a sub's — that plan needs an explicit section for autonomous equipment: what the stop-distance behavior actually is, who has authority to shut it down, and how it's logged when it does. "The vendor says it stops automatically" is not a line item OSHA documentation or your insurance broker will accept without more detail.

That last point is worth raising with your broker directly, before you're the one explaining an incident involving a machine with no operator of record. Nobody has litigated that yet at scale; you don't want your project to be the first.

This one tells you the technology is already doing production work without a person controlling it in real time — a threshold the others haven't crossed publicly yet. Bedrock says dozers, dump trucks, and loaders are next, working toward coordinated autonomous fleets rather than single retrofit machines.
