AI can now fly a $100 drone that tracks a person by face. That's your next jobsite security drone — and a new legal exposure.

Anthropic's own drone research and a separate NBC News demonstration both landed in the first two weeks of August with the same finding: today's general-purpose AI models can write working flight-and-tracking code for a consumer drone that costs about $100, enough to autonomously locate and follow a specific person by face — no custom autonomy hardware, no drone-industry background required. That capability isn't staying in the lab. It's arriving on construction sites the same way it's arriving in police departments: as a feature on a security drone a GC already owns or is shopping for.

What did the research actually find?

Anthropic, working with Andon Labs, published Drone-Bench in late July: a benchmark testing 15 AI models from three developers on whether they could autonomously fly a drone to find and follow a person, broken into five sub-tasks — reconstructing a 3D map from video, localizing the drone within it, navigating between rooms, detecting the target, and following them. The strongest models cleared detection and following above a human baseline; the weak point was building the initial map. Days later, NBC News reported researchers had gone further with the same class of models, using publicly available AI systems from Anthropic, OpenAI, and other developers to write the software that let a sub-$100 consumer drone autonomously stalk a person around a house using facial recognition, gliding through doorways on its own.

Why does this land specifically on a jobsite?

Construction already has a theft problem drone vendors are selling into: industry estimates put annual equipment and material theft at $300 million to $1 billion nationally, with about 70% of incidents happening after hours, which is why perimeter drone patrols and robotic guard products have become a standard line item from site security vendors. Autonomous facial-recognition tracking used to be an expensive, enterprise-grade add-on. The AI capability jump means it's now cheap enough that a security vendor — or a GC's own IT-savvy PM — can bolt it onto an off-the-shelf drone instead of buying a purpose-built system.

The same shift is already visible in public safety. More than 1,000 U.S. police, fire, and emergency agencies had cleared FAA approval to fly autonomous drones beyond visual line of sight as of February 2026, and vendors like Flock Safety, Skydio, and Brinc are adding automated plate-reading and detection features directly onto those platforms — with reporting this month noting there's no federal privacy floor on what gets captured. Illinois is the one that has already produced large settlements against employers over biometric time clocks and badge systems — the same legal exposure a face-tracking security drone would create if deployed without consent.

What should a GC or sub do before adding this to a security program?

  1. Ask the vendor a direct question: does the drone detect an unauthorized presence, or does it identify a specific person by matching a face against a stored list? Sales copy that just says "AI detection" doesn't answer that.
  2. Check the job's state before the drone's spec sheet. Illinois, Texas, Washington, and — starting this fall — Connecticut have rules a generic perimeter-security contract won't cover.
  3. Put the answer in the subcontract now. Consent language, signage, and data-retention terms are cheap to write in before deployment and expensive to litigate after a worker or former employee finds out they were on a face-match log they never agreed to.
