What did Google actually build and pull?

Google Earth's "Create Image" feature launched on the web on July 30, 2026. Users could zoom to a real location, tap "create image," type a prompt, and get a photorealistic scene generated by Google's Nano Banana 2 model — grounded in that spot's actual satellite, aerial, and 3D-mapping data rather than a blank canvas. Google marketed it directly at architects, urban planners, and real estate professionals: type "reimagine this empty lot as a vibrant retail district," and the tool renders it on top of the real parcel.

Why does a one-day product rollback matter on a jobsite?

Because construction runs on the exact image types this tool touched, and Google built it for the exact professionals who'd use it on a project:

Doesn't watermarking already solve this?

Google points to its SynthID watermark as an existing safeguard on AI-generated imagery. But SynthID is embedded in the file — and a screenshot, a printout, or a re-saved JPEG in a board packet routinely strips that kind of metadata.
